Bill and Bobbie Jinske fulfilled a dream in opening BENE-FIT Health & Fitness in 2004, literally pouring blood, sweat, and tears into this venture. They created a culture of a mom and pop neighborhood gym, energized by building relationships both with and between members. Business opportunities eventually led them to relocate out of state. The condition of the shopping center deteriorated, ultimately leaving BENE-FIT as one of a few remaining tenants. Despite these challenges, that sense of community has been a factor in the club maintaining a solid membership base.
Bill hired Jan Schmidt as his Assistant Director at Kirmayer Fitness Center at KU Medical Center in 1990. They worked side by side until he retired in 2002. Jan continued working for him as he launched BENE-FIT Fitness & Recreation Consulting, becoming an instructor at the club soon after it opened.
Jan left KU Medical Center in 2012 and launched Blue Bicycle Health and Fitness in 2013 as a means of offering her services as a personal trainer, fitness instructor and wellness coach. In 2015, the shopping center was purchased by a developer with the intent to renovate and revitalize the property. Bill and Bobbie felt that this was the right time to transition the club to new ownership, returning to a local focus.
Jan acquired ownership of the club in June 2016, re-branding it as Blue Bicycle Health & Fitness. Since then,Blue Bicycle Health & Fitness has expanded both in size and in scope with a vision of becoming a major health and wellness resource for the South Kansas City community.
